MOLLIE
THERE ARE CERTAIN KINDS OF FRIENDSHIP
THAT SEEM TO BLOSSOM AND TO GROW
THE ONE I HAVE WITH MOLLIE
IS SURELY ONE OF THOSE.
WE’VE KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR QUITE AWHILE
OUR FRIENDSHIP GOES WAY BACK
WE’VE SHARED TIMES THAT WERE BRIGHT AND SUNNY
AND SOME THAT WERE QUITE BLACK.
WE’VE KNOWN SOME HARD TIMES TOGETHER
AND EACH IN OUR SPECIAL WAY
HELPED EACH OTHER THROUGH ‘EM
TO SEE ANOTHER DAY.
WE’VE SHARED SOME TRAILS TOGETHER
SOME HAPPINESS AND TEARS
AND I CHERISH MOLLIE’S FRIENDSHIP
THAT SHE’S SHARED WITH ME THESE YEARS.
WHEN I THINK OF MOLLIE
I THINK ABOUT HER SMILE
HER EYES SO FULL OF LAUGHTER
HANDLING EVERYTHING WITH STYLE.
EVEN THOUGH HER DAY WAS ROTTEN
AND THE KIDS ARE ALL DOWN SICK
SHE MAKES IT TO WORK AT CHARLES STREET
AND HAS THE ENERGY TO STICK.
AND USUALLY MAKES LIGHT OF IT
BEFORE THE NIGHT IS THROUGH
PUTTING THE DAY BEHIND HER
AND JOKING WITH THE CREW.
SHE DOES SOME IN HOME NURSING
AND REALLY HAS A SKILL
OF CARING FOR THE OLD FOLKS
WHEN THEY’RE DYIN’ OR THEY’RE ILL.
IT TAKES A SPECIAL KIND OF PERSON
HELPIN’ FOLKS OUT IN THAT WAY
TO MAKE ‘EM FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE
AND BRIGHTEN UP THEIR DAY.
MOLLIE LOVES THE COUNTRY
I CAN’T SEE HER ANY OTHER PLACE
SURROUNDED BY HER LIVESTOCK
AND LOTS OF OPEN SPACE.
SHE USED TO BE A PACKER
AND WORKED UP IN THE PARK
PACKIN’ MULES UP IN THE MOUNTAINS
NOW THAT MUSTA BEEN A LARK.
SO WE HAVE A LOT IN COMMON
THAT MAKES OUR FRIENDSHIP FUN
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YA MOLLIE
OUR FRIENDSHIP’S LIKE THE SUN!
